Mothers Day Craft: Heirloom Handprints!

salt_dough_1.jpg

Ok, so with all of your preschoolers and kindergartners not in school right now, we were afraid all the Moms out there would miss out on the quintessential mother’s day gift:  the clay hand print. Trust us, this is something you will end up treasuring forever. Seemingly hokey, I do actually tear up when I hold little Izzy’s old hand prints in my hand. So I do suggest you go ahead and gift this to yourself this mother’s day.

We tested a few recipes and have collected our notes here, so you don’t have to search around for the best recipe and you can use what’s already at home.  Embrace the perfect imperfection of these keepsakes, and jump in!

Cornstarch dough. Very soft and easy to work with. The trick is the continuous stirring over low heat until the dough pulls away from the pan.

  • Mix 1 cup salt with 1 cup cornstarch.

  • Add in ½ cup boiling water to a saucepan and stir over low heat.

  • Knead a little, then make into discs and press in little hands.

  • You can bake these on low (around 200 degrees) to harden or let air dry.

  • If you want to dye the dough, add the food coloring to the boiling water before you mix it in.

Salt Dough (this is a very easy one that your child can do entirely on their own - no stove involved)

  • 2 cup flour

  • 1 cup salt

  • ¾ cup water (a little more if dough feels stuff)

  • Just stir it all together and knead it up.
